Kakuro rules and how to play

This is the solving guide. The Kakuro library is for picking a grid. Here you learn how to read the clues and fill the white cells.

What is Kakuro?

Kakuro is a run-sum puzzle on a grid of black and white cells. White cells take digits 1 through 9. Black cells split the board into runs. DIGIGMA boards are 7×7 or 8×8. There are no given digits. There is one solution.

Goal of the game

Fill every white cell so each run adds up to the clue that starts it, using distinct digits.

Rules

Rule 1

Fill white cells with digits 1–9.

Rule 2

Each clue gives the sum of its run.

Rule 3

A digit cannot repeat within the same run.

Rule 4

Every white cell belongs to one horizontal (across) run and one vertical (down) run.

Every puzzle can be solved logically. You do not need to guess.

How to read a clue cell

A clue cell is dark and cut by a diagonal from top-left to bottom-right. The across sum sits in the upper-right. The down sum sits in the lower-left. If a direction has no run, that triangle stays empty — never a zero.

1 + 3 = 4. Digits in a run are distinct, so 2 + 2 is never allowed.

What Ranked will not tell you

Ranked play never colours a duplicate, an impossible sum, or a wrong cell while you type. Check solution only says there is at least one error.

When you are stuck

Look for runs with only one possible digit set, then see how they cross. Use Draft. Ranked play will not mark a wrong run while you type.

FAQ

Which number is across and which is down?
Across is the upper-right of the diagonal. Down is the lower-left.
Can a run use the same digit twice?
No. Digits in one run are always distinct.
Do black cells without a clue do anything?
They only split runs. They are not playable.
Is there more than one solution?
No. Every DIGIGMA Kakuro has one logical solution.
